Windows XP End of Life Migrations

If you’ve got Windows XP, you’ve got a deadline, and that is April 8th 2014. Microsoft has announced that as of April 8th, they will completely discontinue their free and paid support options, online updates, and most importantly their new security updates.

This could affect your business in that all security issues that are targeted for Windows XP will not be patched leaving you and your business vulnerable to attacks. At the time of its release, Windows XP Service Pack 3 was state of the art in its security, however it is nowhere near sufficient enough to protect you from the present day attacks we are currently seeing on a regular basis.

The malware infection rate for Windows XP is much higher than in newer operating systems like Windows 7 and Windows 8. Staying with Windows XP after it’s end of life also brings upon not only just security but also compliance risks. Failure to maintain compliancy can result in an officially recognized control failure by an internal or external audit body, leading to suspension of certifications, and/or public notification of the organization’s inability to maintain its systems and customer information.

This graph represents the infection rate of PC's by operating system and service pack in the fourth quarter of 2012 as shown in an article posted Microsoft's security blog titled: The Risk of Running Windows XP After Support Ends April 2014
